The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre is one of the most visited places by local and foreign visitors. Known as the Basilica of El Cobre, it has become a site of veneration for the Virgin of El Cobre and Patroness of all Cubans on and off the island.
Located in the town of El Cobre, Santiago de Cuba, this majestic sanctuary is a symbol of faith and hope, attracting thousands of pilgrims each year. Built in 1926, the sanctuary houses the image of Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre, the Patroness of Cuba.
The eternal devotion to the Virgin dates back to the 15th century, when, according to tradition, her image was found floating in Nipe Bay by three fishermen. In 1916, Pope Benedict XV proclaimed her Patroness of Cuba, and in 1977, Pope Paul VI elevated the sanctuary to a Minor Basilica.
The sanctuary is located on a hilltop, offering a stunning view of the surrounding mountainous landscape. The design is divided into three naves, a central dome, and two side towers with bell towers. To reach the temple, visitors can climb a 254-step staircase, which connects with the town of El Cobre.
Every September 8th, El Cobre celebrates the festival in honor of the Virgin, with processions and special events that symbolize Cuban roots and faith, where you can explore Cuban history and culture. Experience incredible artisan traditions, enjoy local hospitality, and tour nearby historical sites.
